Overview

This technote provides information on how ProjectWise Licensing works, the ProjectWise Client license user settings, and how to license ProjectWise Explorer using a passport license.

Terms to know:

• SELECTserver: A Service that provides licensing for all Bentley Products
• Deployed SELECTserver: A SELECTserver hosted at the user site
• Hosted SELECTserver: A SELECTserver hosted at Bentley.com
• ProjectWise Passport license: Provides the holder the ability to use any ProjectWise Client, desktop, or Web application. It will also license the connection between these tools and any licensed ProjectWise Server
• Integration Server: Server that provides connectivity to the datasource

1.   How ProjectWise Explorer Licensing Works.

In general, when you launch ProjectWise Explorer and login to the datasource the Integration Server logs a Client usage to SELECTserver on the Client's behalf. This is the default setup.

2.   The ProjectWise Client Licensing user setting

There is a user setting called "Client Licensing" in the properties \ settings for each ProjectWise account that determines how that user will record a license usage.
This setting has two options:

• Activate and record usage through connected Integration Server - If on, the ProjectWise Client will activate and log its usage to the SELECTserver that the ProjectWise Integration Server is configured to use. (Default setting)
• Activate and record usage through client's configured SELECTserver - If on, the ProjectWise Client will log its usage to the SELECT Server that the computer on which the ProjectWise Client is installed is configured to use. The SELECTserver the Client is activating through can be configured by using the License Management Tool that is delivered with ProjectWise Explorer ("...\ProjectWise\bin\licensetool.exe"), MicroStation or other Bentley software.

This setting lets the administrator specify how license usage is activated and recorded for each user, once logged in to a datasource in ProjectWise Explorer or ProjectWise Administrator. The specified user may use local licensing for one datasource and server licensing for another. If not able to activate locally, the user will be prevented access to their datasources after 30 days from the time of ProjectWise Explorer or ProjectWise Administrator installation.

How to make changes to the Client Licensing user setting:

• Launch ProjectWise Administrator and log in
• Highlight and then right click the user or users you want to change
• Choose properties then click on the settings tab
• Expand Administrative, then expand Client Licensing
• Click on the radio button of one of the two settings for Client licensing, then click apply and okay.

3.   How to license ProjectWise Explorer using a ProjectWise passport license

If the ProjectWise Client is required to record a license usage to a different SELECTserver then that of the Integration Server, you will need to obtain a ProjectWise Passport license and run the licensetool.exe or activationwizard.exe to activate the license.

Procuring a ProjectWise Passport license

• There are three ways to procure a ProjectWise Passport:

1. Purchase a ProjectWise Passport as a perpetual license
2. Take out a subscription for a ProjectWise Passport (by month or by year)
3. Receive a ProjectWise Passport subscription as a benefit of SELECT
   (no-charge SELECT benefit for all MicroStation SELECT subscribers)

• All users can procure a ProjectWise Passport from their Bentley account representative.

Using the ActivationWizard.exe to configure ProjectWise to use the ProjectWise Passport License.

• In Windows Explorer, go to c:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin and launch the activationwizard.exe
• On the product activation wizard page choose either the:
  • SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted Bentley SELECTserver
  • SELECT subscriber with a deployed SELECTserver
• On the ‘Activating against a SELECTServer page', enter in the server name and activation key then press ‘Test Connection'
• If the connection fails click on the proxy button and make any necessary configurations.
• If you need assistance with making the connection, contact Bentley Technical Support.
• If the connection is successful, click next through the rest of the wizard.
• Launch ProjectWise Explorer and log into a datasource to make sure the license is working properly.
